Smart glasses in enterprise: Are we there yet?

Businesses across the world have been embracing innovative technologies for years. From the advent of laptops, to smartphones today, successful enterprises have always been eager to look ahead at the improvements technology could offer their bottom line.

Today, wearables and smart glasses appear to be the new emerging innovation. These devices are predicted to bring about the next workplace revolution. But what does that look like in practice?

The global smart glasses market is expected to grow by 42.87% until 2022 and reach about $20 billion by 2022, compared to $340 million in 2017. IT leaders across Europe are already familiar with the new technology – our latest research has shown that 79 per cent of IT leaders in Europe claim to know about the use of smart glasses for industrial and professional applications. 38% expect smart glasses to be implemented in the workplace within the next 1-2 years, while this rises to 82 per cent when extending to within the next three years. While a majority still describe themselves as being in the research or trial phase, rather than the deployment phase, there is clearly an interest in adoption.

And it’s no wonder: smart glasses can radically transform the way work gets done. Among the highest-ranking benefits workers see in smart glasses is hands-free functionality – 49% of workers consulted across Europe consider this to be the greatest value of smart glasses, followed by improved mobile working (47%) and improved on-site capabilities (42%). With smart glasses, workers can get real-time access to information, streamline workflow processes and communicate with their colleagues, all while hands-free. Furthermore, built-in cameras enable workers to take shots of their work or live stream it, for example allowing for real-time problem-solving.

Business leaders can expect to see an increase in productivity from investing in this technology. According to Gartner, smart glasses are expected to greatly boost workplace efficiency. This is reflected in our research, which suggests that 48% of businesses think smart glasses will improve efficiency and productivity significantly.

Are we there yet?

As of now, smart glasses are an emerging technology and implementation is still in its early stages. However, they have the potential to reshape the workplace and increase productivity and, with IT leaders across Europe keen to integrate them into the workplace, smart glasses will certainly play an increasingly important role over the next few years.
